DECT is a digital wireless technology which originated in Europe, but is now being adopted increasingly worldwide, for cordless telephones, wireless offices and even wireless telephone lines to the home. The younger brother of GSM - Global System for Mobile - it is by contrast a radio access technology, rather than a comprehensive system architecture; DECT has been designed and specified to interwork with many other types of network, such as the PSTN (conventional telephone networks), ISDN (new digital and data phone networks), GSM (mobile phone networks) and more. |

If I have a multi handset phone, do I need a phone socket for each handset?
No. Only the base station is plugged into the phone socket. The remaining handsets only require electricity supply. |
View call information via the LCD such as the name or number (or both) of the person calling. |
- What is the range on most cordless phones?
Most cordless phones have a range of up to 300 metres outdoors and 50m indoors. However, this is dependant on the property the phone is being installed into. |
- What is the advantage of digital to analogue?
A growing number of cordless phones use digital, rather than analog radio transmission. This provides higher security, less interference, and may provide longer range. |
- What is the intercom facility?
Allows you talk from base to handset. Intercom calls can usually be initiated from either piece. Automatic intercom activates the other unit for hands-free response, or remote monitoring. |
Nickel-Metal Hydride batteries can offer up to three times the capacity of the same size standard Nickel Cadmium batteries. Due to their increased capacity and energy density features, users can expect longer talk time and longer standby time. Manufacturers can use NiMH technology to increase operational time and/or decrease the size and weight of a phone. |
- Can I transfer calls from one handset to another?
Yes - you can do this on most cordless phones where stated. If you are not sure, then simply call us. |

This is typically an indication of radio frequency interference. Try moving the base unit to another location in the home, preferably on the highest level of the home. If your phone has a channel button, try changing the channel. Also, make sure the Handset antenna is extended and Base antenna is upright, if applicable. |
- What is 5.8 GHz DSS (Digital Spread Spectrum) Frequency Hopping?
"DSS frequency hopping" is a technology first pioneered in secure military communications. It is now being used in consumer applications like the VTech 5831 5.8 GHz DSS cordless telephone, and it represents the highest level of performance and security as it provides protection against interference and eavesdropping. |
- What is the difference between 900 MHz, 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz cordless phones?
Solution: Cordless phone technology has improved at a steady rate since its inception. Today you can find a wide variety of models to choose from, and they utilize one of three frequencies. Each number, 900 MHz, 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz, refer to the frequency band the phone communicates on. Cordless phones also are available in both analog and digital models, with digital models offering greater clarity and privacy. 900 MHz and is the most widely used frequency band, which also means there is a lot of traffic on the band, which may reduce the clarity of your reception. 2.4 GHz telephones provide even greater reception and security due to operating on a lesser used frequency range. The newest models to hit the shelves are the 5.8 GHz telephones which operate in a much less crowded and higher frequency band than the 900 MHz and the 2.4 GHz. The 5.8 GHz models offer the highest quality clarity, range and privacy. |

- The answering system does not work at all.
Ensure that the answering system line cord is firmly plugged into the telephone jack. Check that the telephone jack is working by plugging a different telephone (one that works elsewhere in the house) into the jack. Ensure that the power supply is firmly connected in the electrical outlet and at the back of the unit, if applicable. Make sure the Answering System is turned ON. |
- My answering system answers, but will not take messages.
Your Answering System may be set for 'ANNOUNCE ONLY' mode, and will only play your outgoing announcement without recording messages. Or, your system's memory may be full, and will not record messages until you erase old messages. |
- The answering system does not answer in the correct number of rings.
Check to see that the Answering System is on. Some telephone companies or PBXs use ringing patterns that affect the unit's response to ringing. |
- My answering system does not respond to 'remote' to touch-tone commands.
Ensure that the phone used is sending touch-tones (during dialing you should hear tones vs. clicking sounds). Sometimes it helps to wait until after the outgoing announcement before attempting remote access. |
- My message waiting indicator never goes off. Why?
This indicator is regulated by a signal sent by the local telephone company. Some of our phones have a feature that allows you to turn off this signal manually. Please refer to your owner's manual. If your unit does not have this feature, please contact your local telephone company to adjust the signal. |
- After I play my messages, the Message Counter returns to '0' and my messages are automatically deleted, why?
The message counter automatically goes back to '0' after new messages have been played to indicate that there are no new messages. The messages have not been deleted. Please follow the instructions in the owner's manual to play old messages. |
- Why does my answering machine play the Outgoing Announcement twice and caller's can't leave messages?
This is normal operation when the unit is in "Announce Only" mode. This is a feature that is used when you want to have an outgoing announcement play but you do not want the unit to take any messages. If you would like your unit to record messages, please see your owner's manual. You will need to take the unit out of "Announce Only" mode. |
- III. No Response from Phone

Try the following: 1) Charge the handset batteries for the required amount of time listed in your user's manual before using the phone (Time may vary from product to product). 2) Ensure that the telephone line cord is firmly plugged into the base unit and telephone jack. 3) Check that the power supply is firmly connected in the electrical outlet, as well as the back of the unit. 4) Check that the telephone jack is working by plugging another phone into the jack. 5) Test that the electrical outlet is working by plugging in another appliance into the outlet. 6) Ensure that both antennas are lifted into the upright position (if applicable to your product). |
- The cordless phone does not ring.
Make sure the ringer switch is set to "ON" or programmed "ON". Move closer to the base (you could be out of range). Unplug some of the other phones (you could have too many extension phones on one line to allow all of them to ring). Ensure that both antennas are lifted into the upright position (if applicable to your product). |
- The cordless phone suddenly stopped working.
Recharge the handset battery. The more the phone is used, the more often the batteries need to be recharged. Charge the handset battery for the required amount of time listed in your user's guide before using the phone. The average battery lifespan is approximately 1-2 years. You may need to replace the battery pack. Return the handset to the base for at least 15 seconds to ensure that the base and the handset are set to the same security code. Ensure that the telephone line cord is firmly plugged into the base unit and telephone jack. Plug a different electrical device into the power outlet to ensure it is live. |
- My corded telephone has no dial tone.
Ensure that the telephone line cord is firmly plugged into the telephone jack and the telephone. Check the line jack using a different line cord. |

If the Power light illuminates on the base, the problem is either a faulty or disconnected power adapter, or the electrical outlet. 5) If the handset has not been properly charged, place it in the base unit cradle and allow it to charge for at least 8 hours. If your battery pack has been in service for longer than 12 months, it may need to be replaced. |
- How long will the battery last between charges?
Talk and standby times vary with different modes. Typically, talk time will range from 4 to 7 hours, with standby time (off the cradle but not in use) ranging from 4 to 7 days. Your results may differ. |
- Can I leave the handset in the charger all the time?
Yes, the batteries cannot be overcharged. |
- Can handset batteries overcharge?
Handset batteries cannot be overcharged; the handset can be left cradled at all times/when not in use. |
- When I pick up the handset I hear multiple beeps.
Recradle handset on the base for 15 seconds and check for dial tone. Recradle handset on base, disconnect power cord for 15 seconds, reinstall power cord and wait 15 seconds before checking dial tone. - I'm not receiving Caller ID information.
1) Not all calls provide CID information. Examples are: blocked calls (PRIVATE), some long distance calls (OUT OF AREA or UNAVAILABLE) and some calls from cellular phones. 2) Caller ID is a subscription service, provided by your local telephone service company. A monthly fee is charged for this service. Contact your local service provider for details. 3) Confirm you are receiving Caller ID service by connecting a different device (Caller ID box, or CID-capable phone) to the line. 4) Allow at least two rings for Caller ID data to be displayed. An occasional display of TRANSMISSION ERROR is not unusual. 5) Disconnect any devices (answering machines, fax machines, etc.) which are connected in series between the telephone wall jack and your cordless phone. |
- I cannot disconnect from a call. Why?
Move closer to the base and try disconnecting. There could be interference preventing the handset from disconnecting the call. |
- Why does my display show ?no line? or ?check tel. line??
If the phone is not connected to an active line, this message may appear. You may want to try a different line cord and/or a different phone jack. |
- Why does the Line in Use indicator not lit when an extension is in use?
The phone you have may not show other phones in use. Some phones will only show "Line in use" if that phone is being used. Please check your owner's manual for information on how this feature works. If your phone should indicate "Line in Use" when an extension phone is in use, this feature works by sensing the line voltage that is provided from your local telephone company. When someone picks up an extension phone, the line voltage drops and the "line in use" indicator will turn on. If the line voltage does not drop enough, the "line in use" indicator will not come on. The line voltage needs to drop to 7-9 volts for this feature to operate properly. There is nothing wrong with the phone. You can contact your local telephone company for assistance with this problem. |
- Why does the display state ?Parallel set in use? when our system is off hook?
The external unit that goes off hook is called a "parallel set". The system warns the user that it has detected a parallel set in use. When your system is on hook (idle), the external unit that goes off hook is called an "extension in use". Note: In the above case, "system" refers to those models where multiple handsets can be registered to one base. |
- Why won't the PHONE or OFF button disconnect a call?
Move closer to the base and try disconnecting. There could be interference preventing the handset from disconnecting the call. |
- Why can't I use my phone as an extension?
Your local telephone company provides your telephone service and along with that comes a certain amount of line voltage. Every time you pick up or turn on a phone, the line voltage drops. Different phones use different amounts of line voltage. Depending on the phone, you may or may not be able to use an extension with your phone. Try different combinations of telephones. There is nothing wrong with your phone or your service. Due to differences between telephones and line conditions, extension use cannot be guaranteed. |
- I cannot register my handset to the base.
(Applies to multi-handset models) Please be sure to enter the entire registration code. Some codes may end with an * as opposed to a digit. |
- How is 5.8 GHz different from 900 MHz and 2.4 GHz technologies?
5.8 GHz DSS operates in the relatively unpopulated 5.8 GHz frequency band, avoiding the overcrowding and interference that may be found in the 900MHz and 2.4GHz bands. |
- What is the benefit of an "expandable system"?
You can add up to five (5) more handsets to this phone system, for a total of six (6) cordless handsets. Since the handsets and chargers only need an electrical outlet (no additional phone jacks are required), you have the freedom to add telephones in locations that typically do not support phones. For example: the basement, garage, workroom, guest room? Anywhere there is an electrical outlet. |
Sound Select is a new feature that allows you to choose from four (4) different audio profiles, finding the one that sounds best to you. - What is the benefit of dual-band transmission?
Dual-band transmission provides greater security, as it provides less opportunity for eavesdropping. It also is more energy-efficient, for maximum battery life. |
- Incorrect time and date on incoming calls
The local telco provides the time of call along with the other caller ID information. If the unit is showing the incorrect time and/or date, report problem to telephone company to resolve. |
- The AC adapter and/or base is warm?
It is normal operation for electronic equipment to become warm. If the unit is uncomfortably hot to the touch, unplug the unit and contact Customer Support for assistance. |
- The number buttons are sticking or not operating properly.
The keypad may be dirty. Try cleaning the keypad and around the buttons with a soft, slightly damp cloth. |
